You might need to play with your microphone volume settings to get recognition to work properly.  You can use trial and error, or you can download Audacity to give you a sense of your recoding levels - see 'Step 2 - Record your Speech with Audacity' (click here for Linux; click here for Windows) of the Submit Speech tutorial for instructions on how to download Audacity and adjust your microphone volume.
