Is voice recognition worth the hassle?

I'm considering doing a project for a particular department at my school in the area of artificial intelligence. I am only considering it because I've been literally waiting for YEARS (10??) for speech recognition (I last looked at sphinx 3) to catch up to everyone else. By that what I mean is the documentation and implementation of a small portion of the project seems terribly time consuming and it also seems necessary that I find out HOW this section of the project works rather than add it on as a stand alone portion of the greater whole. I've written a great deal of the project in the past in seperate programs and am only now considering a culmination of the AI as a really nice expert system/prolog based AI if I can get certain bells and whistles to work on it. One being this ;)

I don't need to know how the various stacks in the CPU work in order to program in many different languages on the computer. However going by the documentation I need to know how a phenome works and what it is and why you have it in chapter one I cannot imagine.

Surely there is some easier way of explaining implementation and limitations of this set of software rather than having someone sit down and having to become a voice recognition expert?

If someone can point me in the right direction for this I'd really appreciate it.

>If someone can point me in the right direction for this I'd really appreciate use commercial VoiceXML as the API to whatever AI you are developing.
