I don't see it was discussed somewhere btw, it would be nice to have a recommended reading page/thread. It would be nice to have a few documents that can get newbie into speech technology quickly. For a start I suggest to use David Gelbart's collection:

But the question is a bit different, what resources do you use to track recent news in speech technologies? Probably some feed or blog is a good place to read. Something like

Ken and I have moved the recommended reading list at http://www.icsi.berkeley.edu/~gelbart/edu.html to a new location in the VoxForge wiki:
http://www.dev.voxforge.org/projects/Main/wiki/TheoryAndAlgorithms
The old location still works, for now, but the list there is not as up to date as the one in the wiki.
