Windows 7 now available for free (in alpha version - though windows systems always seem to be in alpha version) has a very good speech to text system. I'm afraid we're falling behing on this topic.

I tried installing HTK but it was a nightmare... It took me several days before I could get it to distinguish between two words. Literally.

So, how close are we to packages? By packages I mean being able to type "sudo apt-get install speech2txt" to install it and then simply "speech2txt" to get it running? No configuration needed as long as you do not have more than one microphone plugged into the computer... A dream?

Have you submitted any speech?  Have you asked your friends to submit speech? Have you written a blog or forum post on how important speech recognition is to the Free and Open Source community?

This is an Open Source project.  If you want to experience the true benefit of open source, you must invest some time in improving it for yourself and others...

If you (and everyone who reads this) does this, then the 'packages' will come soon enough...

P.S. see here a current list of dialog managers.
